The first thing that I wanted to mention is that I am glad that the visit is behind us. It was great, but I am mentally and physically exhausted. I feel worn out and then at the same time like such a wimp because what I went through over the last couple of weeks was so easy compared to the sacrifice that Michael and Jon are making. Now, let me tell you how it went from my perspective. Several of us got to the Sullivan County Courthouse early and worked on getting things set up. Then Michael, Jon, Trevor, and Alicia arrived. We found a place for Michael to sit down with Hank Hayes from the Kingsport Times News while the rest of us continued to get everything set up for the rally. A little after 5:00 the rally started. Most of the candidates who had indicated that they would make it were there. We had, I believe, 8 candidates for state house, 2 candidates for state senate, 2 candidates for US house, and of course Michael. The second reporter showed up late and was interviewing Michael as the rally began (for the Bristol Herald Courier). To be perfectly honest, I was disappointed with the turnout from voters at the event. We had about 50 people total in attendence. Some told me that we should be happy if we got 30. But it is hard to swallow that when you get so many candidates together that so few are willing to come out and hear them. I also felt bad because, not knowing how big a crowd we would get, I asked a local hot dog vendor if he wanted to set up. He agreed, but the crowd was so small that he really didn't do enough busy to make it worth his while I am sure. Almost all of the candidates were willing to proclaim their support for smaller government, except for a couple of bring-home-the-bacon candidates. Michael's remarks were fairly short, but were attention grabbing. The newspapers were great. The Bristol Herald Courier ran a piece based on their reporters interview with Michael, while the Kingsport Times News ran a story on the rally but completely focusing on Michael's message. As a Libertarian, I was very happy with the coverage. As the event organizer, I felt that the media did the other candidates a disservice, but it falls into the category of not- my-fault. Michael and the rally also appeared on the 11 o'clock news which was nice. After the rally, which ended early, we headed over to the House of Ribs for dinner. It was a great experience. We had a strong turnout of about 27 total, including some people who had never been to a Libertarian event. Michael, Trevor, and I spoke to the assembly and then we had dinner. After that, Tony really pumped the crowd for money and as I think that you have seen from Trevor's note, folks responded. The House of Ribs did a great job with the event and I would highly recommend them. After dinner we sent Trevor and Alicia back and I got Michael and Jon to the Meadowview where they were staying the night. After getting them settled, I headed home. I was running late this morning and got to the hotel later than expected. This put us late getting to breakfast with several people who had wanted to meet at Perkins. But we got there, had a good if quick breakfast and then took off for the Charter Media studios. We arrived at the Charter Media studios and Jody Cartier was pretty much ready for us. Michael had a great interview with her and was doing a good job swaying her. But the time was over quickly and we were on our way to NC. Michael was doing a phone interview with Jay Taylor while we were driving while I was trying to get in touch with Susan Hogarth as we both seemed to fighting bad cell phone service. I finally found out that they has come north to pick Michael up and we made the transition. All in all, I think that it was a good visit to Tennessee. Not perfect, but we don't promise utopia. Wanyne, Once again... you and all the guys up there are a huge credit to this party... I can promise you that the campaign did not expect that good of a showing out of little ole' Tennessee but we put on a good show... I am very, very excited about the Libertarian activities going on in upper east Tennessee and I look forward to helping some of you guys sweep into office when we get some good county and city council elections to roll around. - TS

ABSOLUTELY ... and given how little advance warning you had, and the fact that you were piggybacking onto the "marquee" events in NC this weekend, even more impressive ... What's more, you got "non-libertarians" to show up ... that almost NEVER happens in this party ;( > I am very, very excited about the Libertarian activities > going on in upper east Tennessee and I look forward to > helping some of you guys sweep into office when we get > some good county and city council elections to roll > around. - TS yep!
