FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
LIBERTARIAN PARTY OF TENNESSEE
HONORS MEMBERS, LEGISLATORS
(Cookeville, TN) - The Libertarian Party of Tennessee honored two of its members and two Tennessee state legislators at its state convention in Chattanooga, which was held on April 2-4 at the Hilton Garden Inn.
Libertarian Heather Scott, of Mt. Juliet, was given the Richard E. Pearl, Sr. Keeper of Liberty award for her work as a party member and as a Wilson County commissioner. Vernie Kuglin, a Libertarian from Memphis, was given the same award for her fight against the national income tax. Last year, Kuglin won her court fight with the I.R.S.
Also receiving the Keeper of Liberty award was State Rep. Donna Rowland (R-Murfreesboro), and State Sen. Tim Burchett (R-Knoxville), for their work in getting better information to the voters through ballot labeling of candidates.
The Keeper of Liberty awards are named after the Libertarian Party of Tennessee's late state chair, Richard E. Pearl, Sr., of Murfreesboro, who passed away in 2002. "Richard was, in my opinion, the best friend Liberty had in this state. These awards honor people who, like him, work hard for the sake of Liberty in Tennessee," state chairman Ray Ledford said of the awards.
The Libertarian Party is America's largest and most successful third party. In the last election, Libertarians fielded candidates for 255 of the 435 seats in the U.S House as well as 25 of the 33 Senate seats up for election -- the first time in eighty years that any third party has contested a majority of the seats in Congress. The Libertarian slate of U.S. House candidates received 1.7 million votes, the first time any third party has received over a million votes for U.S. House.
