Dumas Announces As Candidate For County Commission District 2 Seat
[February 9] Chattanooga, TN – Joe Dumas, an outspoken taxpayer advocate and a
professor in the Computer Science and Electrical Engineering department at UTC,
today announced his candidacy for District 2's seat on the Hamilton County
Commission. Dumas will be on the ballot as an independent candidate in the
August 3, 2006 county general election.
"For too long," Dumas said, "District 2 has been represented by a tax-and-spend
liberal politician masquerading as a Republican. My incumbent opponent has
apparently never seen a tax increase proposal he didn't like and has done
nothing to stop the constant growth of county government at the expense of
Hamilton County's hard-working, and retired, citizens. Many of those citizens
refer to him as a RINO – a 'Republican In Name Only'. It is time for him to be
held accountable by the voters, and it is time for new leadership in District 2."
"I want every property owner in Hamilton County to know that I am his or her
best friend. In the wake of the infamous Kelo vs. New London decision, I will
stand up to protect private property rights and fight eminent domain abuse. I
will also resist any attempt to increase property taxes in Hamilton County and,
if four other commissioners will join me, I would like to roll back the property
tax increase enacted – with my incumbent opponent's help – last year by a 5-4 vote."
"Vehicle owners should know that I am their best friend, too. I will oppose any
attempt to institute a wheel tax in Hamilton County. And I want to repeal the
de facto wheel tax imposed by the County Commission last year when they
instituted the costly, inconvenient, unfair, and (many studies show) ineffective
vehicle inspection program."
"Finally, I want to be every taxpayer's best friend. The citizens should know
that I will not support any new tax or any increase in existing taxes. And to
demonstrate my commitment to fiscally conservative policies, I pledge to serve
the citizens of Hamilton County completely pro bono. I will not accept the
salary or pension benefits normally paid to commissioners. I will not accept a
county cell phone or any other 'perks' paid for with taxpayer funds. And I will
travel only if absolutely necessary for official county business – no 'junkets'
paid for by taxpayers or lobbyists for special interests."
Though he will be listed on the ballot as an independent, Dumas expects to
receive the endorsement of the Libertarian Party. "My campaign will cross party
lines to unite the citizens of District 2 who are fed up with the incumbent's
tax-and-spend approach. I invite independents, third party supporters,
Democrats (who apparently won't have a candidate in the race), and conservative
Republicans who are ready for some fiscal discipline, to break from the current
power structure and support the Taxpayer's Best Friend, Joe Dumas, in the August
3 election."
